Project overview
Intended market
Small and medium businesses, professional service providers, consultants, contractors, landlords, schools, churches, repair businesses, hospitality operators, transport providers, retail/counter operations and institutions that need professional receipt issuance with strong local ownership and offline capability.
Engineering responsibility
Frontier DevConsults owns the product architecture and implementation across the receipt domain, financial engine, template system, local persistence, POS integration, inventory lifecycle, local authentication/RBAC, offline licensing, optional connected delivery, Tauri desktop packaging, validation and deployment tooling.
Problem or opportunity
Many receipt and POS tools are SaaS-first and become dependent on continuous internet access or vendor-hosted data. This product was designed for users who want an application they can install and operate locally, while still retaining optional connected services when useful. A core architectural requirement was that the Receipt Maker remain fully functional without POS, while POS may depend on the Receipt Domain but never the reverse.
Objectives
- Deliver a standalone Receipt Maker that never depends on POS
- Make POS optional and enforce the dependency direction POS → Receipt Domain
- Keep core business operation local and usable without internet access
- Preserve immutable historical receipts while allowing templates to evolve
- Support user-controlled business branding and multiple receipt formats
- Use decimal-safe money calculations and transactional numbering/idempotency
- Keep Email, SMS and WhatsApp delivery optional rather than required
- Support offline commercial licensing without a permanent licensing server dependency
- Package the product as a downloadable desktop application
Challenges and constraints
- Reconstructing the project away from the initial Firebase/SaaS assumptions without discarding conforming receipt-domain work
- Maintaining strict Receipt Maker independence from POS
- Combining editable/versioned templates with immutable issued receipt history
- Making sale, receipt, payment, numbering, audit and inventory transitions atomic
- Supporting commercial licensing without requiring an always-online validation service
- Keeping provider secrets out of the distributed desktop application
- Preparing cross-platform Tauri packaging while validating a real macOS Intel artifact
Engineering approach
The implementation followed a controlled local-first reconstruction. Components were retained only where they conformed to the documented architecture; incompatible Firebase/SaaS assumptions, fake delivery behavior and invented product branding were removed. Tauri provides the downloadable desktop shell, Rust provides native services and offline license verification, SQLite is the authoritative local store, and Supabase/PostgreSQL is isolated to optional connected-service entitlements, usage and provider relay functions.
Architecture
Architecture narrative
The Receipt Domain is canonical and standalone. Manual receipt issuance writes immutable SQLite receipt snapshots directly. The optional POS module composes the same receipt engine inside an atomic sale transaction. Online delivery is separated from the financial transaction and routed through an authenticated Supabase Edge Function.
frontend
React 19 + TypeScript + Vite 8 + Tailwind CSS 4 premium configurable desktop UI
backend
Tauri 2 / Rust native application services; Supabase Edge Function only for optional connected delivery
database
Local SQLite is authoritative for receipt/POS data; Supabase PostgreSQL stores only optional connected-service entitlements and usage
infrastructure
Downloadable Tauri desktop application; GitHub source/release workflows; Vercel used as a UI preview surface rather than an application dependency
services
Native PDF/file-save support, local printing, SHA-256 receipt integrity and Ed25519 offline license verification
integrations
Optional Resend Email, Twilio SMS and Meta WhatsApp Cloud API through a JWT-protected Supabase relay
Engineering decisions
Keep Receipt Maker independent from POS
Reason: Standalone receipts serve many non-retail workflows and must work even when POS is disabled.
Engineering benefit: The application supports professional services, institutions and general receipt issuance without forcing a checkout model.
Use local SQLite as the authoritative operational database
Reason: Core workflows must remain available without continuous internet access.
Engineering benefit: Customers retain local operation and data continuity even when connectivity is unavailable.
Store immutable issued receipt snapshots and version templates
Reason: Historical receipts must not change when a design or business template is edited later.
Engineering benefit: Receipt history remains auditable while template customization stays flexible.
Use decimal-safe financial calculations
Reason: Binary floating-point arithmetic is unsuitable for financial totals.
Engineering benefit: Taxes, discounts, payments and POS totals are calculated deterministically.
Use Ed25519 offline commercial licensing
Reason: Licensing must not turn the local product into an always-online application.
Engineering benefit: A signed license can be verified locally using only the embedded public key.
Keep delivery-provider secrets server-side
Reason: Resend, Twilio and Meta credentials cannot safely ship inside a desktop binary.
Engineering benefit: Optional delivery remains available without exposing provider secrets or making local receipt issuance cloud-dependent.

Challenge, response, outcome
Cloud-first foundation conflicted with product direction
Response: Moved authority to Tauri + SQLite and removed Firebase/cloud dependencies from core receipt/POS operation.
Verified outcome: Core workflows now operate locally and do not require internet access.
POS and Receipt Maker risked becoming tightly coupled
Response: Enforced architecture tests and service boundaries where POS imports the Receipt Domain and the Receipt Domain never imports POS.
Verified outcome: Standalone receipt issuance remains a first-class independent workflow.
Receipt history could be altered by later template or payment changes
Response: Added immutable receipt snapshots, exact template-version references and SQLite mutation triggers.
Verified outcome: Issued financial history remains stable while new drafts/templates can evolve.
Refunding a POS receipt could desynchronize inventory
Response: Implemented atomic POS reversal covering sale status, receipt status, refund records, audit log and stock movements.
Verified outcome: Tracked inventory and financial history remain consistent during reversal.
Connected delivery required secret provider credentials
Response: Moved providers behind a JWT-protected Supabase Edge Function with RLS, entitlements and rate limits.
Verified outcome: Provider secrets stay outside the distributed app and connected services remain optional.
Security and reliability
- PBKDF2-based local password/PIN verification
- Role-based access enforced at UI and application-service boundaries
- SHA-256 receipt snapshot integrity
- SQLite triggers protecting issued receipts, payments, sales, stock movements, refunds and audit history
- Idempotent receipt issuance and POS checkout
- Atomic local transactions for numbering, financial history and inventory
- Ed25519 signed offline licenses; private signing key never ships with the application
- Provider secrets excluded from the desktop client
- Supabase connected delivery protected by JWT authentication, RLS, per-account entitlements and rate limits
Performance and scalability
Core receipt/POS work executes against local SQLite and therefore does not incur network latency or depend on cloud availability. Vite code splitting separates UI, connected-services, document-generation and desktop-runtime dependencies. Atomic SQLite transactions keep numbering, receipt history, payments and inventory consistent under retries and reversal workflows.
User experience
The approved interface uses a premium configurable shell with customizable business logo, display name, tagline, colors, light/dark/system theme, navigation treatment, density and corner style. Users can issue quick or itemized receipts, select/version templates, operate POS when licensed, save PDFs natively, print locally and opt into connected delivery without changing the core offline workflow.

Engineering insights
Local ownership and offline reliability were treated as architectural constraints rather than optional deployment settings. The resulting system separates durable local financial workflows from additive connected services: the customer can lose internet access without losing receipt issuance, POS operation, history, templates, customers, catalog, PDF or print capabilities.
